If you or a loved one receives Medicaid in Illinois, there are some big changes you need to know about. A new law was recently passed that affects how Medicaid works — but there’s also action you may need to take now.

The Big Beautiful Bill: What It Means

The "Big Beautiful Bill" was passed by both the Senate and the House of Representatives and signed by President Trump on July 4, 2025. This bill will have significant impacts on people receiving Medicaid benefits. While it was just signed, none of the changes are set to start until January 1, 2031.

That gives us time to prepare — but some Medicaid rules are already being enforced again, including redetermination.

What Is Redetermination?

Redetermination means the state is reviewing your Medicaid coverage. They want to make sure your information is still correct and that you still qualify for the program.

You will receive a letter in the mail when it’s time to renew. This letter is VERY important. If you don’t respond, you could lose your Medicaid benefits.

What Should You Do?

  • Watch your mail — Look out for a letter from the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS).

  • Complete the form — Fill out your redetermination form even if nothing has changed.

  • Send it back — You can mail it, fax it, or upload it online.

    1. Upload: medredes.hfs.illinois.gov

    2. Fax: 1-866-661-7025

    3. Mail: PO Box 1242, Chicago, IL 60690

Also, make sure your address and phone number are up to date at www.ABE.illinois.gov or by calling 1-800-843-6154. It is imperative that you keep this information up today and that you are responding to your redetermination letter before your deadline.

Need Help?

This process can be confusing, but you don’t have to go through it alone. While MR Insurance Solutions is not licensed to assist with filling out Medicaid forms, you may contact your local Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS), Family Community Resource Center (FCRC),

or contact Illinois HFS Client Enrollment Services at 877-912-8880.
