Understanding Medicare Benefit Periods: What You Need to Know

One of the most confusing aspects of Medicare is the concept of a “benefit period.” Unlike traditional health insurance, which typically resets annually, Medicare Part A uses benefit periods to determine coverage for hospital and skilled nursing facility stays.
A benefit period begins the day you are admitted as an inpatient in a hospital or skilled nursing facility. It ends once you have gone 60 consecutive days without receiving inpatient care. If you are admitted again after those 60 days, a brand-new benefit period begins.
This distinction is important because each benefit period comes with a new Part A deductible. For example, in 2026, the Medicare Part A deductible is $1,676 per benefit period (this amount can change annually). That means you could potentially pay the deductible more than once in a single year if multiple benefit periods occur.
Let’s look at an example. Suppose you are admitted to the hospital in March and discharged a few days later. If you remain out of the hospital for more than 60 days, your benefit period ends. If you are hospitalized again in June, a new benefit period begins, and you would be responsible for a new deductible. However, if you have a Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage plan, your deductible may be different.
However, if you are readmitted within 60 days of your discharge, you remain in the same benefit period, and no new deductible applies.
Understanding how benefit periods work is crucial for managing your healthcare costs, especially for those who may require multiple hospital visits throughout the year. It also highlights the value of additional coverage, such as a Medicare Supplement plan, which can help cover these repeated costs.
